Welcome to your June Issue of The Audiofile
It is a while since we have sent you a newsletter and much has happened. New and exciting products have hit the market and we will feature some of these in this newsletter and some in future newsletters. Plus, we are having a product night on the 29th of June to which you are invited.
New Zealand Premier Product Launch
Jamo R909 Speaker
The Listening Post is pleased to host the New Zealand premier of Jamo's amazing new high end speaker, the R909. The Danish company has produced a state-of-the-art speaker to solve an old problem. Conventional box speaker cabinets are a compromise: they are responsible for brilliant sound but the box can colour the sound and hold back the movement of the drive units. To solve this problem, Jamo have designed and produced the R909 which is an open-baffle speaker. Picture a stylish flat upright panel with drivers mounted on it and you have the Jamo R909.
The open baffle speaker is not a new idea and although it solves the colouration problem, there have been drawbacks and pitfalls with this type of speaker. Jamo have spent a lot of time and money in addressing this matter and have solved these problems with the R909. What we have is a speaker with exceptionally firm bass, immense transient speed, precision and fluidity displayed throughout the frequency range. Colouration and reverberation - definitely none. Reading the reviews of this product in the various HiFi magazines only confirms that Jamo have produced a winner.
These speakers are extremely stylish and perform amazingly. Jamo have set the bench mark for other serious speaker manufactures to meet. We would love to have you at our launch night to admire and hear this speaker and of course look at the other goodies we have in our shop.

Prices and Finance
The current move in overseas exchange rates is great for exporters, but not good for importers. Many of the products that we sell are still at the old price; however, replacement stock will be dearer. The moral of the story is that prices will go up and if you are thing of making a purchase, you should do it now rather than later. If you do not wish to tie up your funds on that purchase, we can help as we have arranged with a Finance Company where your purchase can be financed with an interest free 17 months deferred payment loan (subject to lending criteria) on roduct $599 and over. This simply means that you do not have to make any payments for 17 months and during the 17 month period, there is no interest payable by you. This offer closes on the 30th of June and please ring one of our sales consultants if you need any additional information.
iPOD Sound Dock
The iPOD is here to stay and we have many accessories that will enhance your enjoyment of it. One hot product is the Bose Sound Dock ($549). This plugs into the mains and the iPOD sits in a cradle on the front of the unit. The Sound Dock is small in size but has a big clear sound, something that you would expect and get from Bose. The Sound Dock comes with a remote so that you can skip songs and change the volume without touching the iPOD, plus the iPOD will recharge when plugged into the unit. Because the unit is small, it will fit in a small space in your car and would be great to use at your beach house or for those that travel a lot, your hotel or motel room.
Staff News
We would like to introduce to you our newest member on our sales team, Scott McNab. After completing his computer degree at Otago University, Scott did a dive course and was a diving instructor in Australia. He left Australia for Hamilton as he got sick of the good weather, lots of diving and being forced to socialise with the fairer sex (Scott's words).
Scott has proven to be a very valuable member of our sales team - his product knowledge is excellent, he has a friendly manner in dealing with customers and is able to determine and advise what is best for customers needs. As a bonus, Scott is passionate about music and films and has just recently upgraded his music system.
Head Phones
The head phones that come with the iPOD are not very comfortable and don't sound that great. A set of good head phones can only increase your enjoyment of your music where the sound will be clearer, the base stronger and more accurate and the music will be more involving. Sennheiser make a large range of head phones and there are several models available that are particularly suitable for the iPOD. If you are travel around, there is the PX100 headphone which retails for $119. These have an excellent sound and the main benefit is that they can fold up and be stored in a protective case. If on the other hand size and storage is not a problem and you want a top sounding head phone that really enhances your music, there is the HD595 which retails for $429. This was reviewed in a recent issue of Tone magazine along with other brands of head phones and was a clear winner. If you are not sure, come in with your iPOD and hear the difference.
Graham's Recommended DVD
Bob Dylan - No Direction Home - Director Martin Scorsese.
Yes, I know I lived my youth in the 60's and I am definitely not biased, but according to me and others of my era, this period was the most exciting musically and historically. No Direction Home is certainly a time capsule of the 60's, covering the big changes in the direction of music, the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war protest movement. Martin Scorsese is a top movie director and does a great job with this film. He includes a lot of previously unseen live footage of Dylan and other 60's musicians. His interviews with a 60 year old Dylan are very revealing and shows that Dylan has lost none of his way with words. The film flows well and it is one of those that once you start watching, you want to see it to the end. This would make a great early Christmas present, particularly for yourself.
Second Hand Equipment
We always have a selection of second hand equipment and this changes from time to time. Check our website (www.listening.co.nz) if you are interested and we may have something that you are looking for.
Music Nights
On the first Tuesday of each month, we open the shop doors at 7-30pm for a music night. We set up a different sound system each night and the idea is that you bring along two CD's and you will have the chance of playing a track from each. It also means that you will have the chance of hearing other people's music, some of which you will like so much, you will go out and buy the next day! Everyone is welcome and the night tends to be a very social occasion. We normally finish at about 10-00pm and if you wish to bring some wine or beer, you are most welcome to do so. If you need more details, ring us at the shop and we can assist.
